The 2012-13 season marked the end of the Big East as we know it. Seven “Catholic schools” decided to break away and form a new basketball-centric conference (and keep the Big East name in the process). Out of this realignment comes a new conference, minted the American Athletic Conference (or The American). There will still be some shuffling over the next few years as realignment settles, although the league will retain members with plenty of Final Four appearances on their resume.
In 2013, the members will be:
- Central Florida (UCF)
- Southern Methodist (SMU)
- Connecticut (UConn)
- South Florida (USF)
The following season, 2014, will see Louisville (ACC) and Rutgers (Big Ten) depart but 3 new members added:
- East Carolina (ECU)
The American seems to already be a success, recently inking lucrative TV deals with ESPN and CBS. The inaugural AAC Men’s Basketball Tournament will be held in March 2014 at the FedEx Fourm in Memphis, Tennessee.
