Chicago Bears History
The Chicago Bears traveled a familiar road in 2007, falling out of playoff contention in the NFL after a Super Bowl appearance the previous season. It’s an age old story around the league. The combination of talent, drive, and luck is an elusive thing and hard to capture in consecutive years. For the Bears it began with the turmoil of Tank Johnson and continued with the fiery rhetoric of Lance Briggs. But most telling of all was the performance of Rex Grossman.
Grossman has always been an up and down quarterback, flashing heroic talent one minute and journeyman skills the next. In 2007 the downside came on hard. The Bears opened up with a loss to San Diego that saw a total passing yardage of 145. He came back in Game 2 against Kansas City, but when the Dallas Cowboys came to Soldier Field and blew the Bears away 34-10 Grossman was in trouble. By the end of that three interception performance, Rex was benched and Brian Griese was handed a team already derailed. Losses to the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, and Green Bay Packers closed the book on the Bears playoff hopes.
But don’t think Lovie Smith has lost his touch. The Bears also suffered injuries on defense that hurt the most potent part of their game. Tommie Harris went out and Brian Urlacher spent time nursing ailments. A little rehab time will cure that. As for the quarterback position, Grossman will either see heavy competition or be shown the door before the 2008 NFL regular season gets underway.
