The Jacksonville Jaguars have quietly turned into one of the toughest teams in the AFC, if not the NFL. Consider the 2007 NFL season. Jacksonville fought their way ton 11-5 record and a playoffs spot. Along the road they managed to beat the Tennessee Titans, the San Diego Chargers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. What do all these teams have in common? They were all playoff teams in 2007.
How did Jacksonville do it? By gambling with abandon. Head Coach Jack Del Rio rolled the dice before the season opener by releasing long time starter Byron Leftwich and installing David Garrard into the offense. Garrard responded with the best year of his career, throwing for over 2,500 yards and 18 touchdowns. Del Rio also became known for gambling in close games, going for it on fourth down more than any team in the NFL. When you’ve got the one-two punch of running backs Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew, that’s what you do.
Where did it get the Jaguars? Within one game of playing for the Super Bowl. Jacksonville knocked the Steelers out in the first round before falling to the eventual AFC Champion New England Patriots. Fans are already gearing up for 2008 in Jacksonville. When you’re ready to catch a rising star, think Jacksonville Jaguars and Sportstravel.com.
