The San Diego Chargers came into 2007 on the heels of uncertainty. Marty Schottenheimer was out, derailed by his failure to take the talent laden Chargers anywhere in the NFL playoffs. In came Norv Turner, a choice of Head Coach that was roundly criticized due to his past record as the head man in the league. A month into the season it appeared as if the critics were right. San Diego was 1-3 and sitting at the bottom of the AFC West. Then came a decisive victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 5 followed by a six-game winning streak to end the season as AFC West Champions. Suddenly the Chargers machine was humming and talk of an elusive Super Bowl appearance began to swell.
In the playoffs the Chargers broke their one and done syndrome with a win over the Tennessee Titans and capped that by knocking off the defending Super Bowl Champion Indianapolis Colts. Alas, taking on the unbeaten New England Patriots in the AFC Championship was too much to ask and San Diego left on the short end of a 21-12 score. Looking ahead, the Chargers can gain confidence from a Pro Bowl caliber performance from quarterback Philip Rivers and running back LaDainian Tomlinson. Throw in the growing talent on defense and you’ve got a formula for winning football in Qualcomm Stadium for many years to come.
