Mercedes-Benz Superdome History

Address: 1500 Poydras Street
New Orleans, LA 70112

Although going by a different name now, The Mercedes-Benz Superdome (formerly the Louisiana Superdome) is a survivor. When it opened in ‘75 it was the largest domed stadium in the world. Known most for being the home of the New Orleans Saints, the Superdome saw mostly misery as the Saints plodded their way through the NFL in a steady losing effort. There were a few good years when the Saints made the playoffs but things never quite clicked for the Black and Gold. It was a fine place for a Super Bowl though as the New Orleans party atmosphere lent itself to celebration. Altogether the Dome has been the site of six Super Bowls, more than any other site. It is also the annual site of the Sugar Bowl where football fans were treated to the LSU Tigers BCS National Championship victory over the Oklahoma Sooners. In addition to football the Dome has seen several NCAA Final Four appearances, the last coming in ‘03.

Then came Hurricane Katrina and a devastated Mercedes-Benz Superdome looked to be on its last legs. Miraculously, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome underwent a massive restoration and came back with a vengeance. The New Orleans Saints started winning and in ‘06 the Crescent City watched the Saints capture a last minute victory over the Philadelphia Eagles to advance to their first NFC Championship. The revitalized Mercedes-Benz Superdome will not only be hosting the Sugar Bowl again, but in ‘12 the BCS National Championship game comes to New Orleans.
