Louisiana Superdome History
New Orleans, LA
The Louisiana Superdome is a survivor. When it opened in 1975 it was the largest domed stadium in the world. Known most for being the home of the New Orleans Saints, the Superdome saw mostly misery as the Saints plodded their way through the NFL in a steady losing effort. There were a few good years when the Saints made the playoffs but things never quite clicked for the Black and Gold. It was a fine place for a Super Bowl though as the New Orleans party atmosphere lent itself to celebration. Altogether the Dome has been the site of six Super Bowls, more than any other site. It is also the annual site of the Sugar Bowl where football fans were treated to the LSU Tigers BCS National Championship victory over the Oklahoma Sooners. In addition to football the Dome has seen several NCAA Final Four appearances, the last coming in 2003.
Then came Hurricane Katrina and a devastated Louisiana Superdome looked to be on its last legs. Miraculously, the Louisiana Superdome underwent a massive restoration and came back with a vengeance. The New Orleans Saints started winning and in 2006 the Crescent City watched the Saints capture a last minute victory over the Philadelphia Eagles to advance to their first NFC Championship. The revitalized Louisiana Superdome will not only be hosting the Sugar Bowl again, but in 2008 the BCS National Championship game comes to New Orleans.
