New Hampshire Motor Speedway is a destination attraction to more than 600,000 visitors every year who come trackside to fulfill their own need for speed. The 1,200-acre multi-use complex in Loudon is the largest sports and entertainment facility in New England, with a capacity for 105,491 spectators.
New England’s beloved speedway hosts two coveted NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series race weekends each year, one of which is a championship playoff race. Big name drivers, including Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch and teammates Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart have all celebrated wins in this Victory Lane.
Nationally-televised events mean millions of people can witness all the sights and sounds of a race weekend, putting a spotlight on the Granite State. Monster Energy Cup weekends are the preeminent sporting events in New Hampshire each summer, but they are hardly the only excitement for fans who speed through the gates.
“The Magic Mile” hosts racing from April through October, featuring vintage racing and car shows, motorcycles, various auto clubs and racing school events. The engines are hot and the track is full virtually every day of the spring, summer and fall, including the parking lots and other areas of this multi-use facility.
In its current incarnation, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, now owned by Speedway Motorsports, Inc., is a magnet for hundreds of thousands of race fans every year, creating a major economic engine for the Granite State, pumping more than $400 million dollars in tourism spending into the state’s economy every single year.
Under the SMI umbrella, headed by chairman Bruton Smith, the company owns seven speedways throughout the country in addition to New Hampshire. In the Granite State, it employs 30 people full-time and 1,500 part-timers at the height of the racing season.
Since the SMI purchase from the Bahre family in 2008, there have been many upgrades to the track. Expanded RV spaces, infield reconfiguration for increased usable space and functionality, the installation of an enhanced trackside safety fence and increased directional signage were a few of the upgrades completed immediately.
A massive new bathhouse, the Frank Webb Bath Center, was built for the nearly 10,000 campers on site each year and added 30 shower stalls and 30 toilets, for the most expensive bathroom in New Hampshire.
An amenity enhancing the fan experience is the $1.2 million state-of-the-art scoreboard, boasting three 32-foot-by-18-foot Panasonic TV screens and a scrolling leaderboard with color graphics that gives fans running positions and lap times for all 43 drivers.
That culture spreads beyond the gates of “The Magic Mile.” Each year, the speedway family gives back to those who make racing so successful in New Hampshire by donating $1 million to local non-profit groups and children-related charities. The New Hampshire Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities serves underprivileged children throughout New England and benefits more than 12,000 children each year.
“Fans First” is the speedway's motto. It embodies the goal of serving the community, bringing in new events, improving amenities and creating a year-round destination for family entertainment. This is what keeps the speedway on track for future growth.
